For two and a half days in the middle of May, Tampa, FL will become the international nexus for prominent jazz composers, musicians, scholars, students, and industry professionals from across the world as the IJCS returns after an almost 10 year hiatus. In addition to the very distinguished line-up of featured guests, over 65 composers, from 25+ States and 6 Countries, have been selected through an international call for scores and papers, to have their works presented in workshops, concerts, and poster sessions while others will present research related to jazz composition.

Registration & Registration for the Symposium is Open to ALL with discounted prices and single day admission offered for students. Full Symposium registration includes admission to all three evening concerts. For more information on registration visit: isjac.org.

Public Access: Through the generous support of Tampa's Gobioff Foundation, two of the prime Saturday afternoon events are Open to the Public completely FREE of charge. Seating is limited, however, are will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sat., May 20th. 3:00 PM: SONIC Concert (award-winning works of four featured guest composers)

Sat., May 20th, 4:00 PM: Guest artist panel discussion of the creative process by several of today's most prominent jazz composers.

Education Track

Making its debut this year is a new “Education Track" that will offer novice student jazz composers as well as those with minimal writing experience foundational support in sessions led by prominent jazz educators/composers. A special “Student Auditor" registration fee has been set up to make this extremely accessible to students of all backgrounds and ages.

History

The Jazz Composers' Symposium first debuted in 2006 with a stellar guest artist line-up that included Bob Brookmeyer, John Clayton, & Dave Douglas. A production of the University of South Florida's Center for Jazz Composition (headed by Chuck Owen & Dave Stamps), the inspirational gathering was an instant hit and was followed by a 2008 production featuring Jim McNeely, Bill Holman, Stefon Harris, & the Turtle Island String Quartet. The two events drew jazz composers from over 35 States as well as 6 countries. Sadly, and in spite of its tremendous popularity, the Symposium was a casualty of the economic downturn that resulted in the closure of the host USF Center. With the founding of ISJAC, the Symposium has a new producer and is making its much-anticipated return.
